What happened when Dutch classrooms went phone-free?

From 1 January 2024, phones stay out of secondary-school classrooms in the Netherlands. Most schools chose a plain rule: phones at home or in a locker (57.6% of schools), or handed in at the start of class (20.3%).

Half a school year later, 75% of schools with a rule reported better focus and none reported worse. Schools calling phones a problem fell from 62.5% to 28.8%.

Grades moved less: 68.6% of schools expected better results, 27.7% saw them.

What the study says

(in the original Dutch)
