What does a pack a day cost in a year?

At the US state-average price of $10.15 a pack (with all taxes): $10.15 × 365 = $3,704.75 a year. Ten years: $3,704.75 × 10 = $37,047.50.

The price runs from $8.01 a pack in Missouri ($2,923.65 a year) to $14.83 in New York, incl. NYC's $1.50 tax ($5,412.95 a year).

What the study says

  • “The retail price per pack includes all federal and statewide excise and sales taxes but not any purely local taxes (except that NY City’s $1.50 per pack tax is factored into the overall NY State price per pack), and is based on data from The Tax Burden on Tobacco, 2024 and reports of state cigarette tax increases.”
  • “The price per pack data have been adjusted for retailer-based discounts, promotions, coupons, as well as local policies that affect pack prices, tobacco company price increases and retailer/wholesaler mark-ups since prices were last reported.”
